the Forest

The BWCAW isn’t the only place to canoe and camp in northern Minnesota. In fact, if you’re looking for solitude and adventure, you may have better luck in areas elsewhere in the Superior National Forest than in the BWCAW proper. As more and more people discover the splendor of the Boundary Waters, the Forest’s wild areas are becoming popular options for paddling adventures away from the crowds.

Trip options outside the BWCAW range from portage-and-paddle trips to easy-to-access lakes where you may be joined by the occasional motorboat. For more information about recreation opportunities in the Superior National Forest, visit the Forest’s recreation resource page.
